CANDOLIM VILLAGERS UNITE AGAINST URBANISATION PLANS AT GRAM SABHA

In a show of unity and determination, the residents of Candolim on Sunday made it clear that they will not tolerate any plans for urbanisation in their coastal village. At a gram sabha held on Sunday, the villagers unanimously opposed the idea of urbanisation, resolving to take all necessary steps to prevent such projects from taking shape in the area.

The gram sabha, which saw a large turnout of villagers, was a clear indication of the community’s strong opposition to urbanisation. The villagers expressed concerns that urbanisation would lead to loss of their unique cultural identity, strain on local resources, and degradation of the environment.

Residents of Candolim expressed frustration over the alleged sale of traditional taxi stands and parking spots to outside interests. According to a villager, this has left locals without a place to operate their tourist taxis. Sarpanch Blaize Fernandes acknowledged the issue, stating that the stands are meant for locals, but claimed he couldn’t do much about the situation as taxi owners seem to control the old stands.

The proposed sewerage treatment plant (STP) also drew concerns from villagers, who fear it could pollute the Nerul river. However, Sarpanch Fernandes defended the project, citing the need for sustainable development. He explained that many large buildings have their own STPs, but often dump treated water into drains, causing problems. The village panchayat believes a centralized STP would prevent untreated sewage from being dumped in fields and other areas.

Villagers also raised concerns about constructions being carried out based on the outline development plan (ODP), urging the panchayat to take action. Sarpanch Fernandes clarified that the matter falls under the town and country planning department, and builders need to submit fresh plans based on the Regional Plan.

When questioned about the high cost of hiring private security wardens, Sarpanch Fernandes explained that the move was necessary to curb incidents like chain-snatching and to control beggars and touts. The security personnel are stationed at major spots and main roads to maintain law and order.

Calangute Congress block president Lourenco Silveira suggested developing a new modern market complex to alleviate traffic congestion in the current market area. The sarpanch welcomed the suggestion, asking villagers to propose a suitable location for the project.

The gram sabha meeting highlighted the concerns and needs of the local community, with the village panchayat working to address the issues and improve the quality of life for residents.
