Goa all-rounder Chigurupati Venkata picked for India U-19 ODI squad
Panaji: Goa all-rounder Chigurupati Venkata has been named in India’s Under-19 ODI squad for the upcoming home series against Australia Under-19, marking another significant milestone in the 18-year-old’s promising career.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad on Thursday. Australia’s tour of India will feature three One-Day Internationals and two Multi-Day fixtures.
Venkata’s selection comes on the back of an impressive season in domestic age-group cricket. The talented all-rounder claimed 49 wickets and scored 380 runs across four major domestic tournaments last season. He also played a key role in Goa’s run to the quarterfinals of the Cooch Behar Trophy, where he contributed 26 wickets and 224 runs.
Venkata had earlier earned a place in India’s Under-19 Multi-Day squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. He made a strong impact on the tour, including a five-wicket haul in the second match of the series.
The three-match ODI series against Australia Under-19 will be played in Rajkot on September 18, 21 and 23. The first Multi-Day fixture will also be held in Rajkot from September 27 to 30, while the second match is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad from October 5 to 8.
Venkata’s latest call-up further strengthens his position in India’s Under-19 setup and gives the young all-rounder another opportunity to showcase his ability on the international stage.
The Goa Cricket Association President and former Goa Ranji player Mahesh Dessai pointed out that Chigurupati Venkata’s selection in the India Under-19 ODI squad is a proud moment for Goa cricket.
“His performances over the past season have been outstanding, and his ability to contribute with both bat and ball has rightly earned him this opportunity. This is a reward for his hard work and consistent performances, and we are confident that he will make the most of this opportunity,” he said.
While GCA Secretary Tulsidas Shetye said Venkata’s progress was a reflection of his hard work, discipline and commitment.
“His performances in domestic cricket and on the Sri Lanka tour have demonstrated his ability to perform at a high level. His selection for the ODI squad is another important step in his development, and we hope he continues to work hard, grab this opportunity and make Goa proud,” Shetye said.
The Goa Cricket Association congratulated Venkata on his selection and wished him success for the upcoming series against Australia Under-19.
