Guardians Trophy 2026 gets underway in Goa as 10 PVL U21 squads battle through action-packed opening day

Panjim, Goa | 14 August 2026: The inaugural Guardians Trophy 2026 got underway at the Don Bosco Oratory, Panjim, on Friday, bringing together the U21 squads of all 10 Prime Volleyball League (PVL) franchises on one competitive platform. The opening day featured 10 group-stage matches, with the country’s emerging volleyball talent producing a series of closely fought contests as the battle for places in Sunday’s semifinals began to take shape. In Group A, Delhi started their campaign strongly with a straight-sets victory over Bengaluru, winning 15-13, 1511, 15-11. Hosts Goa Guardians U21 also made a winning start, overcoming Chennai in three sets. Goa took control of the opening two sets, 15-6 and 15-12, before Chennai responded to take the third 15-11. Hyderabad then registered a straight-sets win against Bengaluru, including a tightly contested 16-14 third set, while Chennai bounced back from their opening defeat to beat Delhi 2-1. Goa completed an unbeaten opening day with their second victory, defeating Hyderabad 2-1. The hosts claimed the opening two sets 15-12 and 15-13 before Hyderabad took the third 15-12. Group B also produced several close encounters.

Ahmedabad began with a 2-1 victory over Mumbai, before Kochi edged Kolkata by the same scoreline. Mumbai responded in their second match with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Calicut, with the first and third sets both finishing 17-15. Ahmedabad continued their strong start by defeating Kochi 2-1, including an 18-16 second set, while Kolkata closed the day’s action with a 2-1 victory over Calicut. With only the top two teams from each five-team group progressing, Saturday’s matches will determine the four semifinalists who advance to the knockout stage. The Guardians Trophy 2026 semifinals and final will be played on Sunday, 16 August, bringing the inaugural three-day U21 competition to a close in Goa. The Guardians Trophy, organised by Goa Guardians, has been created as a competitive platform for the next generation of Indian volleyball players, bringing together the youth squads of all 10 Prime Volleyball League franchises for the first time on one stage.
