Citing a sharp rise in drowning risks during the monsoon, the District Magistrate of Kushavati has prohibited swimming, bathing, or entering waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes and other natural water bodies across the district for the next 60 days. The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, comes into effect immediately and will remain in force till August 27, 2026.

The move aims to curb mishaps that typically spike between June and August when water levels rise suddenly and currents turn unpredictable.“Every year we lose young lives to drowning in quarries and waterfall pools. With heavy rains forecast, we cannot afford to be reactive,” the DM’s order stated. The district has seen 14 water-related fatalities in the last two monsoon seasons, mostly involving tourists and youth, officials said.
The prohibitory order bars any person from entering, swimming, or bathing in waterfalls, abandoned stone quarries, rivers, lakes, ponds, and similar natural water bodies within Kushavati district limits.
