WRD MINISTER REVIEWS TAR RIVER STRETCH AT GUIRIM, FLAGS FLOOD MITIGATION
GUIRIM: Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Tuesday inspected the Tar River stretch in Guirim to review pre-monsoon preparations and assess flood mitigation measures ahead of the monsoon season.Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Saligao MLA and GTDC Chairman Kedar J. Naik, along with the Sarpanch and panch members of Guirim Panchayat, were present during the site inspection. The team reviewed desilting progress, riverbank strengthening, and drainage channels along the Tar River, which is prone to waterlogging and flooding during heavy rains. Speaking to WRD officials, Minister Shirodkar directed the department to expedite all pending works.
“All desilting and riverbank strengthening work must be completed at least a week before the monsoon sets in. We cannot take chances with public safety,” he said.
Shirodkar added that the department is working closely with the local panchayat to ensure smooth flow of water and prevent inundation of low-lying areas.
“The Tar River is a critical drainage line in North Goa. Clearing obstructions and strengthening vulnerable banks is key to avoiding floods in Guirim and adjoining areas,” the minister said.
Officials said the Tar River swells rapidly during intense spells, affecting fields and residential pockets nearby. Following the inspection, the WRD was asked to submit a compliance report on desilting, culvert cleaning, and flood preparedness before the next review.
