Panaji: Goa’s veteran cricketer Basappa Madar has been selected to represent India in the inaugural Asian Legends Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from January 28 to February 4. He will be joined by Abhijit Kadam from Sangli, selected from the West Zone, marking a proud moment for veteran cricket from the region.
The Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI) has officially announced the Indian squad for the first-ever Asia-level continental championship for cricketers aged 40 years and above. The tournament will feature six Asian nations — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, and Hong Kong — and is being hailed as a historic milestone for veteran cricket in the country.
Former India international Manpreet Gony has been named captain of the Indian side, with Jatin Saxena appointed vice-captain. The squad has been selected based on performances in recent inter-zonal veterans’ tournaments and reflects a strong blend of experienced performers from across the country.
Reacting to the selection, Vinod Phadke, President, Goa Veteran Cricket Association (GVCA) and Secretary, Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI), said,
“The Asian Legends Cup marks a landmark moment for veteran cricket in India. The selection of Basappa Madar and Abhijit Kadam reflects the depth of talent across zones and is a proud moment for Goa and the West Zone. Both players have earned this opportunity through consistent performances, and I am confident the Indian team will make the country proud on the Asian stage.”
Sudesh Prabhudesai, Secretary, Goa Veteran Cricket Association, also expressed his happiness over the selection and said,
“We are extremely happy that a Goan player is part of the Asian Legends Cup squad. It is encouraging to see that every year, with our continuous efforts, one or the other veteran cricketer gets international exposure. Strong performances in our veteran league provide players the right platform and opportunities to progress to the international level.”
Expressing his joy on being selected, Basappa Madar said,
“Representing India at an international veterans’ tournament is a dream come true. I am proud to carry Goa’s name onto the Asian stage and will give my best for the country.”
Sharing his thoughts, Abhijit Kadam said,
“This selection is the result of years of dedication to the game. Playing for India in the Asian Legends Cup is a huge honour and a responsibility I look forward to.”
The Asian Legends Cup 2026 is expected to add a new dimension to veteran cricket, offering seasoned players an opportunity to compete at the highest continental level while celebrating the spirit, passion, and longevity of the sport.
