Mapusa Market’s Cleanliness Drive: A Wake-Up Call for Civic Responsibility
Mapusa: The recent cleanliness drive at Mapusa market has raised questions about civic responsibility and accountability. While the efforts of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) are commendable, locals are skeptical about the sustainability of the drive.
The key issues that remain unresolved include Lack of Civic Responsibility The MMC’s delayed response highlights a lack of accountability and apathy towards public health. Need for Community Involvement: Vendors and shopkeepers must cooperate to maintain cleanliness and Inadequate Infrastructure: Insufficient waste receptacles and poor drainage systems hinder cleaning efforts.
The MMC has promised to install new taps, erect “no spitting” boards, and impose fines on litterers. However, locals demand more concrete measures, such as deploying permanent workers and installing CCTV cameras to monitor the market.
“The notice was an eye-opener. But why did the MMC act only after being pushed? This shows a clear lack of accountability and apathy towards public health,” questioned a local.
The MMC has also been urged to address the issue of the sub yard, which has been a long-standing problem. Locals have complained about the poor condition of the sub yard, which is often filled with stagnant water and waste. The MMC has assured that efforts are being made to clear the sub yard and improve its overall condition.
