Social Worker Kamlakar Humraskar Urges Govt Action Over Rising Accidents in Dhargal
Raising concerns over the increasing number of road accidents in the Dhargal area of Pernem Taluka, social worker Kamlakar M. Humraskar has submitted a representation to the Directorate of Transport, Government of Goa, seeking immediate measures to improve road safety.
In his letter addressed to the Director of Transport, Humraskar highlighted the growing movement of heavy trucks transporting sand, crushed stone, gravel, and other mineral materials through Dhargal. According to the representation, the substantial increase in truck traffic has led to serious safety concerns for residents, commuters, and pedestrians.
The memorandum points to instances of truck drivers allegedly driving at excessive speeds, operating vehicles recklessly, and losing control, resulting in accidents and risks to human life. It also raises concerns about reports of some heavy vehicle operators driving under the influence of alcohol and drivers from outside Goa being unfamiliar with local road conditions.
Apart from safety issues, the representation notes that heavy truck traffic frequently causes congestion on the Dhargal road, affecting the smooth movement of other vehicles. A shortage of traffic police personnel in the area has also been cited as a factor limiting effective monitoring and enforcement.
To address the situation, Humraskar has urged the Transport Department to take immediate action, including:
Making speed governors mandatory for all trucks operating on Goa roads.
Conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance.
Strengthening enforcement against drunken driving by heavy vehicle operators.
Increasing coordination with the Traffic Police Department for enhanced deployment of personnel on Dhargal road.
Organizing special road safety and awareness drives for truck operators.
Humraskar stated that these measures would help reduce accidents, safeguard lives, and ensure safer roads for the people of Pernem and Goa. Copies of the representation have also been forwarded to the Rajya Sabha MP , Transport Minister, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Deputy Collector and SDM of Pernem, and the Mamlatdar of Pernem Taluka for necessary action.
