Qayi Warriors Win SPL Season 7, MLA Kedar Naik Hails Local Cricket Talent
Saligao: The seventh edition of the Sanjay Premier League concluded on Monday with Qayi Warriors emerging champions of the T20 white leather ball tournament, after a spirited final held in Guirim.Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, who attended as Chief Guest, praised the organizers for a “well-organised tournament showcasing great talent and sportsmanship” from across the Bardez taluka.
He was joined by Guirim Sarpanch Shri Kalpesh Naik, Ex-Sarpanch Fondu Naik, and other local dignitaries. Qayi Warriors lifted the winners’ trophy after a clinical performance in the final, while Sunday Cricketers settled for a strong runners-up finish following a tournament-long run of consistent cricket.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Naik said such leather-ball tournaments are vital for grassroots cricket in Goa. “T20 white-ball cricket at the village level builds temperament, fitness, and team culture. Platforms like SPL give our youth a stage to move from tennis-ball to professional cricket,” he said.
The Sanjay Premier League – Season 7 drew teams from Saligao, Guirim, Sangolda and adjoining villages, with matches played under lights. Organizers said the focus this year was on strict adherence to standard cricketing rules, quality umpiring, and using seasoned leather balls to mirror professional conditions.
Sarpanch Kalpesh Naik thanked the MLA for supporting local sports and assured panchayat backing for upgrading the Guirim ground.
“Tournaments like SPL keep our youth engaged and off the streets. We will work to improve practice facilities,” he said
.The closing ceremony saw trophies and cash prizes handed to the winners, runners-up, and individual award winners for best batsman, bowler, and player of the tournament.
