Goa Health Dept Marks World Malaria Day with ‘End Malaria Now’ Call
PANAJI: North Goa Collector Ankit Yadav, IAS, joined health officials and students at the Goa Science Centre & Planetarium, Miramar, on Friday to observe World Malaria Day under the theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now we can. Now We Must. ”The programme was organised by the Directorate of Health Services under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in collaboration with Goa Science Centre & Planetarium. Addressing the gathering, Collector Yadav stressed the need for community participation to eliminate malaria.
“Goa has brought cases down drastically, but the last mile is the toughest. With surveillance, early testing, and public awareness, we can end malaria. Now we must act together,” he said.
The event at Miramar included an awareness exhibition on mosquito breeding, life-cycle models, and preventive measures. Students from local schools participated in poster-making and quiz contests on vector-borne diseases. Health workers demonstrated the use of rapid test kits and explained symptoms of malaria.
The Goa Science Centre used its planetarium dome to screen a short film on climate change and its link to mosquito-borne diseases, highlighting how rising temperatures can expand breeding seasons.The Directorate of Health Services said World Malaria Day is observed annually on April 25 to keep malaria high on the political agenda and mobilize action. This year’s global theme calls for accelerated efforts to end the disease.Goa aims to achieve zero indigenous malaria cases under the national malaria elimination framework. Officials urged residents to avoid water stagnation, use mosquito nets, and report fever cases immediately to the nearest health centre.
