Pernem Joins state wide National Cyclone Drill; Fishermen Drowning Scenario Rehearsed at Morjim Beach
Pernem: As part of the pan-India Multi-State Mock Exercise on Cyclone and Induced Disasters, a large-scale field drill simulating the drowning of fishermen due to a cyclonic storm was successfully conducted at Morjim beach, Pernem on Wednesday .The exercise was organized by the Goa State Disaster Management services (GSDMA) in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), District Administration North Goa, and Indian Coast Guard, with active participation from multiple stakeholders.
The drill demonstrated a coordinated search and rescue operation at sea, shoreline rescue, first-aid and triage, and evacuation of victims to the nearby Primary Health Centre. The Indian Coast Guard and local fishermen’s association also demonstrated sea rescue techniques using life buoys and rescue boats.
Officials said the objective of the exercise was to test the preparedness, inter-departmental coordination, and response time of all agencies in case of a real cyclone and induced disasters like flooding, drowning and coastal erosion. Speaking on the occasion, officials from the District Disaster Management Authority, North Goa, said that Goa’s 105-km coastline is vulnerable to cyclones and sea erosion, making such mock drills crucial. They emphasized the role of early warning dissemination to fishing communities, strict adherence to fishing ban advisories, and community participation. The exercise concluded with a debriefing session where gaps were identified and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were reviewed to further strengthen the coastal disaster response mechanism.
