KOLKATA: (Aug 22) Emotions will run high and history will be at stake when Antonio Lopez Habas seeks a record-equalling 17th Durand Cup title with East Bengal against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the summit clash here on Sunday.
For Habas, the final presents an opportunity to add another chapter to his remarkable Indian football story, but for East Bengal it is also a chance to end a 22-year wait for the prestigious trophy and draw level with their arch-rivals on 17 Durand Cup titles.
The Spaniard, who has previously guided both Mohun Bagan and the erstwhile ATK to multiple ISL triumphs, took charge of a new-look East Bengal side after the club’s title-winning ISL campaign last season after the departure of coach Oscar Bruzon and the end of its association with sponsors Emami.
