Ageing Trees will Pose Risk This Monsoon, Fire Services Sound Alert

Panaji: With the monsoon season around the corner fire services across Goa have flagged ageing and decayed trees as a growing hazard to life and property.

Senior fire officials said the number of tree-fall incidents typically surges during June–September due to strong winds, saturated soil, and weakened root systems. Old trees with hollow trunks, fungal growth, or heavy leaning are especially vulnerable.“
We are get frequent calls for trees falling on roads, houses, and vehicles, during the monssons ” a fire department official said. “Many of these are old, unmanaged trees in urban and roadside areas. Prevention is key.”The department has urged local bodies, PWD, and citizens to conduct pre-monsoon audits of trees in public spaces, residential colonies, and along highways. Pruning overgrown branches, removing deadwood, and felling structurally unsafe trees can prevent accidents, officials said .The public has been asked to report leaning or damaged trees to the local panchayat, municipality, or nearest fire station helpline. Fire teams remain on 24×7 alert for emergency clearance, but officials stressed that proactive trimming saves lives.
