HYDERABAD: Dr Maryam Afifa Ansari is a pioneering name in Indian medical history. She is widely recognized as the first Muslim woman neurosurgeon in India, breaking barriers in one of the most challenging fields of medicine.
Hailing from Hyderabad and originally from Malegaon, Maharashtra, she completed her schooling in an Urdu medium school before pursuing MBBS at Osmania Medical College. There, she earned five gold medals for her academic excellence. Later, she cleared the highly competitive NEET-SS exam with an impressive rank to specialize in neurosurgery. She also received advanced training from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, further strengthening her expertise.
In April 2024, she was honored at the Aalekh Foundation Women Achievers Awards for her outstanding contribution to the medical field. The recognition highlighted her journey as a symbol of determination and excellence in healthcare. Dr. Ansari often speaks about her journey as both a blessing and a responsibility. Beyond medicine, she is also known for her interest in calligraphy, painting, and mentoring young students.
Her story continues to inspire many aspiring doctors across India, showing how dedication and education can transform lives and break long-standing barriers in society.
