“Padma Shri for Dr. Armida Fernandes: A Proud Moment for Divadkars and Goenkars”
Dr. Armida Fernandez (also spelled Armida Fernandes) is a neonatologist and public health expert. She is the daughter of Prof. Armando Menezes. She was born in Hubli, Karnataka, and built her medical career in Mumbai, where she became Professor and Head of Neonatology and later Dean at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General (LTMG) Hospital and Medical College. She is widely recognized for establishing Asia’s first human milk bank in Mumbai in 1989 and has worked extensively on maternal and child health, nutrition, and breastfeeding promotion. She has been honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of her contributions to medicine and public health.
Prof. Armando Menezes was a distinguished Goan educator, poet, scholar, and academic born in São Mathias, Divar, Goa, in 1902. He became a respected professor of English and Latin, teaching at places such as St. Xavier’s College, Bombay, and later Karnataka College, Dharwad. He also served as Principal and academic leader in several colleges and was deeply involved in literature and education throughout his life. His work included poetry, essays, and contributions to English literature in India.
Among Dr. Armida’s siblings who have excelled in their own fields, the more prominent ones are George Menezes, who served in the Indian Navy and later became a writer and Catholic lay leader, and Dr. Francis Menezes, an expert in psychology and behavioural science.
