“Rebello Seeks Centre’s Aid to Save Goa from ‘Destructive Development’
PANAJI: After witnessing the chaos and confusion prevailing in the pristine and prominent villages in the state due to mega projects and the acquisition of huge tracts of land belonging to Adivasis and backward communities, retired Chief Justice of India, Justice Ferdinando Rebello, is seeking the intervention of the Central Government in resolving these pressing issues amicably. He aims to save Goa’s land from destructive development and urges the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.
Goa, a tiny state on India’s west coast, is known for its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and lush green landscapes. However, rapid development and tourism have put pressure on its fragile ecosystem and local communities. Mega projects, including infrastructure and real estate ventures, have led to conflicts over land acquisition, particularly affecting Adivasis and backward communities.
Retired Chief Justice Ferdinando Rebello, a respected voice in Goa, has raised concerns about the impact of these projects on local communities and the environment. He has appealed to the Central Government to intervene and resolve these issues amicably, emphasizing that the ongoing disputes are:
– Threatening Goa’s unique cultural identity and environmental integrity
– Causing divisions among Goans, leading to social and economic instability
– Hinder the state’s overall development and progress
Justice Rebello emphasizes that these issues are causing Goans to fight among themselves, creating unnecessary enmity and division, which is detrimental to the state’s health, wealth, development, and progress.
Meanwhile TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane stated that he wasn’t aware of Justice Ferdinando Rebello’s representation to the Chief Minister, but assured that Goa’s government will act according to the law. He emphasized that the government stands by the people and the Chief Minister will respond to the representation
