Roberto Carlos says he’s ‘recovering well’ after undergoing heart procedure in Brazil

SAO PAULO: Roberto Carlos, the legendary Brazilian and Real Madrid footballer, is recovering well after undergoing a heart procedure in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 52-year-old former defender clarified that he didn’t suffer a heart attack, but rather had a planned coronary angioplasty to address a heart obstruction detected on Monday.

“I recently underwent a preventative medical procedure, planned in advance with my medical team,” Carlos said on social media, posting a smiling photo from his hospital bed. “The procedure was successful, and I am well.”

The hospital, Vila Nova Star in Sao Paulo, confirmed that Carlos had a heart obstruction and was advised to undergo the minimally invasive procedure, which widens blocked or narrowed heart arteries. He’s currently stable and under observation in an intensive care unit .

One of the most attack-minded left backs of all time, Roberto Carlos won 125 Brazil caps and played for 11 years at Madrid.

He was a member of Brazil’s World Cup teams which reached the final in 1998 and won in 2002. He also helped Brazil win the Copa America in 1997 and 1999.
