Pilerne; — Iconic Goan poet Manohar Rai Sardessai’s poetry will lend a touch of literary class to Concerto De Natal, a concert that honours Goa’s multicultural roots while embracing the spirit of Christmas, by blending Konkani and Portuguese music with beloved English and French carols, presented in a concert format.

Scheduled to be held from 7 pm on December 14 at the Museum of Goa (MOG) premises in Pilerne, the event will feature the release of a brand-new Christmas carol: a setting by Oscar Castellino to a poem by the late Goan poet Manohar Rai Sardessai, as a tribute to his legacy. Also debuting is a fresh musical collaboration between Castellino and the littérateur’s son, Umesh.

Some of Sardessai’s poems which would be performed to music at the concert Concerto De Natal are Ball Jesus Zolmolo, Mari Matek Ballok Zala, Jinnen Mhaka Sogle Dile, while his son’s poem Ailim Natalam, is also a part of the event’s musical roster.

“Featuring a brand-new Christmas carol set to the poetry of the late Manohar Rai Sardessai brings a deep cultural resonance to the concert. Alongside original Konkani pieces for violin and ghumot, and classic carols in Portuguese, English, French, and German, his work anchors the evening in a distinctly Goan spirit. Presenting Sardessai’s poetry in a new musical form honours his legacy while embracing innovation,” said Nilankur Das, curator of the Concerto De Natal, adding that this tribute expands genre boundaries and creates something fresh, a cultural gift for the future by the Museum of Goa.

The stellar line-up of musicians for the Concerto De Natal includes, Oscar Castellino, an international opera singer and globally celebrated composer; Chelsea D’Silva, a versatile singer known for her soulful voice and ease across languages; Jason Quadros, a pianist, arranger and educator; Nahil Flores, a percussionist blending rhythm and tradition with the Goan ghumot and Senon de Souza, a talented violinist whose versatile playing spans multiple genres.

The musicians will perform works drawing from the literary legacy of the well-known poet and Sahitya Akademi award winner, led by works of composers such as Micael Martins, Gabriel Pais, Castellino himself and the classical composer Adolphe Adam.
