Municipality Cracks Down on Market Encroachments”
Mapusa: In a decisive move to reclaim public spaces, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) launched a comprehensive anti-encroachment drive in the bustling Mapusa market. The operation, led by Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar, aimed to clear goods and stalls obstructing footpaths and roads, restoring ease of movement for pedestrians and vendors alike.
The drive, prompted by numerous public complaints, saw teams of municipal officials and workers removing unauthorized structures and seized goods worth several truckloads. Areas targeted included Ganeshpuri, Housing Board, Court junction, Bodgini temple, and the famous Alankar theatre.
“This action is a response to the long-standing issue of encroachments plaguing our market,” said Chief Officer Shetkar. “We had issued public notices, but unfortunately, many refused to comply. We will continue this drive daily, and those who fail to adhere to the rules will face penalties” ¹.
The MMC has formed two teams, each comprising a municipal inspector and ten workers, to ensure sustained enforcement. The move has been welcomed by residents and traders, who hope for improved traffic flow and a cleaner, more organized market environment.
