Serendipity Arts Festival: On Miramar Beach, a Kulhad Pavilion Comes With a Sustainability Message for Goa

Panaji, December — The Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF) this year will tap into the iconic vista of Miramar beach at Panaji to drive home the message against littering and promote sustainability by erecting a Kulhad Pavilion, made entirely from mud cups, to serve as a reminder of how waste can also be used positively and become a shade for the many thousands who travel to Miramar beach.
The installation is the brainchild of Vinu Daniel of Terra-grove, aims to transform the beachfront with a reimagination of how public spaces can be inviting, responsive and sustainable in Goa’s sun-drenched, tropical landscape.
“Kulhads or mud cups used to be the most familiar sight at railway stations, strewn across train tracks. Today, our beaches also face a similar challenge and have become the prime spot where all of the waste we have discarded comes crashing back. These unreinforced kulhad vaults meander across the side of the beach, providing shade or home to both humans and animals alike,” Daniel said.
Crafted from terracotta Guna tiles, the structure cools the surrounding area while blending seamlessly into Miramar Beach’s landscape, evoking a sense of harmony with nature. Terra Grove was conceived as part of curators Thukral and Tagra’s 2024 project, Multiplay, and is supported by Milton and the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited.
Serendipity Arts Festival, India’s premier multidisciplinary arts festival, returns to Panaji for its landmark 10th edition from December 12-21, 2025. This year’s festival transforms the city into a living canvas with immersive exhibitions, dynamic performances, interactive workshops and public art installations across multiple iconic venues.
The Kulhad Pavilion is just one of the installations that will be on display during the festival, Smriti Rajgarhia, Director of Serendipity Arts, said: “As we mark our 10th edition, public art will speak directly to the soul of Panaji—its heritage, its communities and its evolving urban landscape. Each installation across the city will be designed as an encounter: a moment that encourages reflection, curiosity, and connection. Public art enables us to democratise culture, and across ten days, this year’s Festival will celebrate that spirit by making art an integral part of the city’s daily rhythm.”
