“Mapusa Gets a Cleaner Sweep: MMC Outsources Garbage Collection in Major Drive for Tidiness”

Mapusa, Goa: In a bid to improve cleanliness and streamline garbage collection, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has unanimously resolved to outsource door-to-door garbage collection and transportation in Ward No. 1 to Ward 10. The decision, passed by the council, will see the private contractor taking charge of waste management in the area, including the operation of a sanitary incinerator, bio-methanation plants, and garden waste collection.

The move is expected to bring significant improvements to the municipal market, including the fish, flower, and vegetable markets, and matki bazaar. The outsourcing proposal, worth Rs 2.59 crore, also includes housekeeping of municipal complexes.

MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal stated that only collection has been outsourced, and the council will provide vehicles and bins while the contractor will provide labour. The council also resolved to purchase a refuse collection truck and dual-cabin pickup using solid waste management funds.

The decision follows concerns raised by councillors, including Shashank Narvekar, who highlighted the need for outsourcing to address the waste management issues in the area. The MMC has already outsourced garbage collection for Wards 11 to 20, and this latest move is expected to complete the city’s waste management overhaul.

The council also discussed the commercial complex project, which is complete but still lacks completion certificates due to a pending land dispute. A special meeting will be held to discuss the issue, following requests from the Town and Country Planning and Electricity Departments seeking space in the new building.
