Bogmalo Celebrates São João with Pomp; Panchayat Minister Godinho Takes Part in Kopel,celebrations
Vasco: Panchayat Minister Shri Mauvin Godinho joined the vibrant São João celebrations organised by the Sports and Cultural Club of Bogmalo on Tuesday, immersing himself in the traditional Goan monsoon festival dedicated to St. John the Baptist.The Minister, who is also the local MLA, was welcomed by club members and villagers donning kopels – traditional crowns made of flowers, leaves, and fruits. He participated in the festivities, interacted with youth groups, and witnessed the customary well-jumping and water games that mark the celebration across Goa. Addressing the gathering, Godinho emphasized the importance of preserving Goan culture and passing on traditions like São João to the next generation. “Festivals like São João are the soul of Goa. They bring communities together, especially our youth, and keep our unique identity alive,” he said.
He lauded the Sports and Cultural Club of Bogmalo for organizing the event and encouraging cultural activities at the grassroots level.The celebration featured traditional Goan music with ghumot and brass bands, folk dances, and the distribution of seasonal fruits like jackfruit, pineapples, and mangoes.
Locals dressed in colourful attire took part in the sangodd and pool events, reviving the age-old customs associated with the feast.São João, celebrated on June 24, commemorates St. John the Baptist and marks the onset of the monsoon. It is widely observed in coastal villages of Goa with community feasts, well-jumping rituals symbolizing the saint’s leap in his mother’s womb, and revelry. The event at Bogmalo saw participation from panch members, senior citizens, and a large number of youth. Club officials thanked the Minister for his presence and support in promoting local sports and culture.
