Crime Branch probe demanded into Mapusa youth’s suicide over garbage dumping row

Crime Branch investigation demanded into Mapusa youth’s suicide over garbage dumping row

MAPUSA: Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira has demanded an investigation by the Crime Branch into the death of the Mapusa youth who died by suicide following a garbage dumping controversy.

Ferreira demanded that action be initiated against the person who shot the video of the boy allegedly dumping the waste, for making it viral, and for wrongfully restraining and threatening the boy. He also sought action against the police for registering the FIR and the person who summoned the boy to the police station.

He said the boy was summoned to the police station on June 5, but he was telephoned and called to the station on June 4, where he spent 7 hours without notice.

“I don’t know how the issue could have been picked up by the police and an FIR registered without a complaint. If it was simply dumping of garbage, I didn’t see the reason for an FIR. It was a malicious intent of registering an FIR by the police. The video does not show what he is throwing. Police have no evidence. He was not convicted; a sentence was not there. I didn’t like this and this didn’t fit in law. Section 271 under BNS was registered. What was obnoxious in this act? What did he throw? It was a cardboard, I heard. I don’t know if this is true. The video does not show it. How did the police use this section to register this FIR?” he asked.

“The man who shoots the video takes the key of the bike, threatens him, and wrongfully restrains him. The boy was asking for forgiveness for the waste issue, but the police picked up the issue. His bike number was taken down. The sister was called and the mother too, as the sister’s name was registered for the bike. From 3 pm to 10 pm he was in the police station and the FIR was registered late at night. On what basis did the police register the FIR? He could have been made to pay a fine. News went viral of the FIR as he was made out to be a criminal. In such cases, even faces are blurred as per Supreme Court directions. This has to be investigated,” he said.

He said that he demands, along with the family, that this investigation cannot be carried out by the Mapusa police.

“This investigation resulted in the death of an innocent youngster for a not for a major crime and no fault. I want the law to take its course and justice to prevail. We don’t want people to lose lives for such mistakes made and for the insensitivity of the police,” he added.
