Tributes Paid to Dr. Francisco Luís Gomes on 196th Birth Anniversary in Navelim
Navelim May 31: Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai led the state in paying homage to Dr. Francisco Luís Gomes on his 196th birth anniversary at a function held at the Dr. F.L. Gomes Memorial Trust, Navelim, on Sunday .The Minister laid a wreath and offered floral tributes at the memorial of the 19th-century Goan physician, writer, economist, and parliamentarian. Gomes, born in Navelim on May 31, 1829 was widely known as “The Prince of Intellectuals” in Europe .Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar, former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro, South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS, and Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, were among those who joined the ceremony. Dignitaries garlanded the bust of Dr. Gomes and recalled his contributions to medicine, literature, and liberal political thought. Speaking at the function, Minister Phal Dessai said Dr. Gomes remains an inspiration for Goan youth for his intellect, public service, and commitment to truth and justice. The event concluded with a prayer service and a brief address on Dr. Gomes’ legacy. The annual observance at Navelim draws scholars, students, and public representatives who highlight Dr. Gomes’ role in shaping Goan identity and thought during Portuguese rule.
