25-Cr Infra Works Begin in Calangute; Poriat Ground, Parking Upgrade Announced by MLA Lobo
Calangute: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Wednesday announced that development works worth nearly ₹125 crore have commenced in the constituency, including a ₹1.5 crore upgrade of Poriat football ground and measures to ease parking congestion.
Speaking at a programme in the Village Panchayat Calangute jurisdiction, Lobo said the Poriat ground project will be executed by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and is targeted for completion within 10 months of commencement.“Poriat ground has nurtured many talented footballers for Goa but lacked proper infrastructure. With this upgrade, our youth will get a quality facility to train and play. This is part of our commitment to promote sports at the grassroots and create better public spaces,” Lobo said.
As per GSIDC officials, the scope of work at Poriat ground includes a compound wall, pavilion with changing rooms, floodlights, improved drainage, and turf upgradation.
Present at the event were Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, Panchayat Secretary Arjun Velip, and panch members. Addressing broader civic issues, Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said resolving infrastructure bottlenecks remains the panchayat’s top priority. “Calangute needs strong basic infrastructure — proper drainage, internal roads, street lighting, and public amenities. Parking congestion is a major problem for locals and tourists, especially in peak season. We are working with GSIDC to identify land and create organized parking zones to ease traffic flow,” Sequeira said.
Lobo acknowledged that locals may face temporary inconvenience during execution but appealed for cooperation. “Once these projects are completed, the transformation in Calangute will encourage other coastal constituencies to seek similar development,” he said.
GSIDC will be the executing agency for the projects and will coordinate with the Village Panchayat Calangute.
