Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju Visits Mario de Miranda Centenary Exhibition at Kala Academy
PANAJI: Governor Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Saturday visited the exhibition marking the birth centenary of legendary Goan artist and cartoonist, late Padma Bhushan Shri Mario de Miranda, at the Kala Academy, Panaji. Organised by the Directorate of Museums, the exhibition is being held at the Black Box Auditorium and Art Gallery to commemorate 100 years of Mario’s birth. The Governor was taken through the curated display featuring Mario’s original sketches, iconic cartoons, book illustrations, travel diaries, and rare memorabilia that chronicled Goan life with humour and warmth for over five decades. Appreciating the collection, Governor Raju said Mario de Miranda’s art transcended generations and geographies. “His pen captured the everyday Goan with such honesty and wit that it became a mirror to our society. Centenary tributes like this ensure his legacy continues to inspire young artists,” he noted during his visit. Officials from the Directorate of Museums briefed the Governor on Mario’s journey from Loutolim to becoming one of India’s most celebrated illustrators, with his work appearing in The Illustrated Weekly of India, The Times of India, and several international publications. Special attention was drawn to his murals and his ability to document festivals, markets, and village life in intricate detail. The exhibition also highlights Mario’s contribution to Goa’s cultural identity, with panels tracing his awards, including the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012 posthumously.
