Dry Grass Fire Near Sateri Temple Doused Swiftly; Mapusa Fire Team Prevents Spread in Canca
Verla Canca, April 15: A fire that erupted in dry grass and bushes near Sateri Temple, Sateri Nagar, on Wednesday night was contained promptly by the Mapusa Fire Services, preventing it from reaching residential pockets and the temple premises. The incident was reported at 20:08 HRS, after locals spotted flames and rising smoke in the open area close to the shrine. A fire tender from Mapusa Fire Station was dispatched immediately, with Leading Firefighter Shri Ranjit Gaonkar heading the response team. On arrival, the crew found patches of dry vegetation ablaze, with the fire threatening to spread due to the evening breeze. The team swiftly laid hose lines and began firefighting operations, focusing on cutting off the fire’s path toward nearby homes and the Sateri Temple compound. Using beaters and water jets, the firefighters brought the blaze under control within minutes. Extended cooling operations were carried out to ensure no smouldering embers remained, given the risk of re-ignition in the dry summer conditions. No damage to the temple or property was reported, and no injuries occurred. Locals commended the quick action of the Mapusa Fire Services, noting that the area sees regular footfall of devotees and residents, especially in the evening. Leading Firefighter Gaonkar said the team’s priority was containment. “Dry grass fires spread fast at night and can panic residents. We isolated the fire and ensured the temple area remained safe,” he stated.
