Manipal Hospital Goa Completes 201 VELYS Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Surgeries
Goa,
Panaji October 2026: Manipal Hospital Goa has achieved a significant milestone by completing 201 VELYS robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries under the leadership of Dr. Rohan Dessai, Consultant, Hip & Knee Replacement Surgeon, Orthopaedics. The achievement reflects the hospital’s continued focus on advanced surgical technology, clinical expertise and patient-centred orthopaedic care. Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, a condition in which the protective cartilage inside the knee gradually wears away, can make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and getting up from a chair increasingly difficult. When medication, physiotherapy and other non-surgical treatments no longer provide adequate relief, knee replacement surgery may be recommended to restore mobility and reduce pain. VELYS is a robotic-assisted technology used during knee replacement surgery. It helps the surgeon plan the procedure according to the patient’s knee anatomy and provides real-time information to guide bone preparation and implant positioning. This supports greater precision during surgery and allows the surgeon to make adjustments based on the individual patient’s needs. The technology assists the surgeon in making informed decisions, while the procedure itself remains under the surgeon’s control.
Speaking about the milestone, Dr. Rohan Dessai, Consultant, Hip & Knee Replacement Surgeon, Orthopaedics, Manipal Hospital Goa, said, “Every patient has a different knee structure, degree of joint damage and set of mobility needs. Robotic-assisted technology helps us plan knee replacement surgery with greater precision and tailor the procedure to the individual patient. Reaching 201 VELYS robotic joint replacement surgeries is an important milestone for our team. Our focus remains on relieving pain, improving mobility and helping patients return to their daily activities with greater confidence. The technology supports our surgical expertise, but careful patient selection, sound clinical judgement and post-operative rehabilitation remain equally important to a successful recovery.”
Mr. Surendra Prasad, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Goa, said, “Achieving 201 VELYS robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries reflects the commitment of our orthopaedic team to continually improve the care we provide. For patients living with chronic knee pain, even routine activities can become challenging and affect their independence. By combining experienced clinicians with advanced surgical technology, we aim to offer treatment that addresses each patient’s needs and supports their recovery. This milestone reinforces our commitment to bringing advanced healthcare closer to the people of Goa.”
Robotic-assisted joint replacement has been in use for over a decade and is increasingly being used for knee and hip replacement surgeries. With the concept of personalised arthroplasty, we can tailor surgical planning and execution to achieve precision of up to 1 mm and alignment accuracy of up to 1 degree. Pre-operative CT scans allow surgeons to plan the procedure in advance, while real-time adjustments offer greater flexibility during surgery. Post-operative recovery is generally smoother, with patients often experiencing faster recovery and less pain compared with conventional surgery. With this milestone, Manipal Hospital Goa continues to strengthen its orthopaedic services through the integration of technology, specialist expertise and a focus on helping patients manage joint problems and maintain an active, independent life.
