Manipal Hospitals Goa Successfully Performs Goa’s First Indigenous MyVAD Mechanical Circulatory Support-guided high-risk Angioplasty
Panaji, September XX, 2026: A 57-year-old woman with acute coronary syndrome (a sudden reduction in blood flow to the heart) and decompensated heart failure (a sudden worsening of the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively) underwent a high-risk multivessel coronary angioplasty (a procedure to open blocked blood vessels supplying the heart) at Manipal Hospital Goa.

The patient had blockages in multiple coronary arteries and was in a high-risk condition. As her heart was already struggling to maintain adequate blood circulation, additional support was required during the complex procedure.
The medical team used a MyVAD mechanical circulatory support device (a temporary device that helps maintain blood flow when the heart is unable to pump sufficiently) during the angioplasty. The device provided haemodynamic support (support to maintain stable blood pressure and blood circulation) throughout the procedure.
The intervention required coordination between the Cathlab team (specialists who perform minimally invasive heart procedures), cardiology team and intensive care team. The patient had been under the care of the Medical Intensive Care Unit or MICU (a specialised unit for patients requiring close monitoring and intensive treatment) for around 10 days.
According to the treating team, this was the first reported use of the MyVAD device in the Konkan region and within the Manipal Hospitals group in India.
Dr. Nikhil Sontakke, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Manipal Hospital Goa, said, “When a patient has multiple coronary blockages along with heart failure, the heart may have limited capacity to cope with a complex angioplasty. In this case, the temporary circulatory support provided additional stability during the procedure. This allowed us to focus on treating the blockages while closely monitoring and supporting the patient’s circulation.”
The case highlights the role of coordinated, multidisciplinary care in managing complex heart conditions. At Manipal Hospital Goa, temporary mechanical circulatory support helped the team maintain blood circulation while performing the high-risk angioplasty. The patient remains under medical supervision following the procedure.
