KCCA’s Goan Faculty Chefs Come Together with Students to Prepare a Traditional Sadya
~ Verna-based Kamaxi College of Culinary Arts celebrates Onam through food, culture, traditional attire and festive games.
Panaji, August 2026: Verna-based Kamaxi College of Culinary Arts (KCCA) celebrated Onam with a vibrant day of food, festivities and cultural bonhomie, bringing students and faculty together to experience the traditions of Kerala’s cherished harvest festival. Rooted in the legend of King Mahabali, Onam celebrates prosperity, community, sharing and the joyous homecoming of loved ones.
A highlight of the celebration was an elaborate traditional Onam Sadya prepared collaboratively by KCCA’s students and faculty chefs. Served on banana leaves, the traditional feast brought together rice, an assortment of traditional curries and vegetable preparations, pickles, accompaniments, papad, banana chips and other festive delicacies.
For KCCA’s Goan faculty chefs, this was their first experience preparing an elaborate Onam Sadya, making the occasion particularly meaningful. Working alongside the students, the faculty chefs explored the flavours, techniques and traditions associated with Kerala’s festive cuisine, turning the preparation of the meal into a hands-on cultural and culinary learning experience.
Subhasis Mandal, Principal, Kamaxi College of Culinary Arts, said, “Onam is a celebration of togetherness and we wanted our students and faculty to experience this firsthand. What made this celebration especially meaningful was seeing our non-Malayali faculty chefs come together with the students to prepare their first elaborate Onam Sadya. At a culinary institution, understanding food also means understanding the culture and traditions behind it. This celebration allowed everyone at KCCA to learn, participate and celebrate together.”
KCCA also created a large traditional pookalam (a floral arrangement) and embraced the occasion with traditional Kerala attire, including sarees and mundus. The celebrations extended beyond the kitchen with students participating in traditional games and team activities, bringing the KCCA community together in the spirit of Onam.
