A Bicycle, A New Independence”: A Gesture from Social worker Helps Calangute Resident Get Back on the Move
Calangute: Sometimes it takes just one small act to change someone’s daily routine. For Alex D’Souza, popularly known as Shairu, that act came in the form of a bicycle.
Thanks to a thoughtful donation by social worker Ramu Simepuruskar, Shairu now has a new way to manage his daily local travel — with more independence, less struggle, and a lot more dignity. The gesture followed a conversation between Ramu and local MLA Michael lobo who spoke about Shairu’s daily commuting challenges. Without hesitation, Ramu came forward to donate a bicycle, ensuring Shairu could move around Calangute and nearby areas on his own.
“After speaking with my good friend and social worker Ramu Simepuruskar, he generously came forward to donate a bicycle to Alex D’Souza (Shairu),” MLA Michael lobo said . “It will make it easier for him to get around independently.
For many, a bicycle is just a mode of transport. For Shairu, it means fewer dependencies, timely errands, and the freedom to go about his day without waiting or asking for help
Ramu, known in Calangute for his quiet social work, said he was happy to help. “A small gesture can make a meaningful difference in someone’s everyday life.” said Ramu
