From Goa to Greater Heights: How the Goa Cricket Association Is Building a Cricketing Culture That Competes Beyond State Borders
Panaji: The Goa Cricket Association (GCA) is redefining the state’s cricketing ambitions with a long-term vision centred on professionalism, international exposure and a structured pathway from grassroots cricket to the highest levels of the game.
That vision is reflected in the senior team’s pre-season tour to Oman, where Goa will face the Oman national side after an intensive high-performance camp in Bengaluru. More than just a preparatory tour, the initiative is designed to expose players to international conditions while preparing them mentally and technically for the domestic season.
The Goa Cricket Association Senior Men’s Team departs for Oman on an international practice tour from August 8 to August 18, 2026, as part of its preparations for the upcoming domestic season.
The progress of Goa cricket is also evident in Venkat Chigurupati’s selection to India’s U-19 team and Abhinav Tejrana’s selection to the prestigious Duleep Trophy.
The squad also includes 19-year-old Yash Kasvankar, a highly promising all-rounder regarded as one of the brightest young prospects and a key part of Goa cricket’s future. His inclusion in the Oman tour reflects the GCA’s commitment to giving emerging talent valuable international exposure at an early stage.
For GCA President Mahesh Dessai, these milestones are the outcome of sustained investment rather than short-term planning.
“Our vision is to prepare our players in a professional environment that closely mirrors the demands of modern-day cricket. Overseas exposure allows them to train in different conditions, play quality practice matches and develop mental toughness. This is an investment in the future of Goa cricket.”
Dessai said the association has focused on building a strong cricketing ecosystem by improving infrastructure, strengthening age-group programmes, enhancing coaching standards and introducing high-performance initiatives.
“Our objective is to create a clear pathway from grassroots cricket to age-group cricket, senior cricket and eventually professional leagues like the IPL. We are committed to identifying talent early and providing the coaching, opportunities and exposure needed for more Goan players to realise their dreams.”
He believes Goa’s identity should extend beyond tourism.
“We want Goa to be recognised as a state that nurtures quality cricketers and offers world-class facilities for training and competition. Every achievement by our players contributes towards building that identity.”
Former India international and Goa Head Coach Dinesh Mongia believes the Oman tour is a crucial step in preparing players for elite cricket.
“The partnership between the Goa Cricket Association and Oman Cricket is a fantastic initiative. The players are excited to compete against an international side because that kind of exposure builds confidence, experience and teaches lessons that domestic cricket alone cannot.”
He said adapting to unfamiliar conditions is one of the biggest challenges in modern cricket.
“The players have moved from rain-hit Goa to training in Bengaluru and now to playing in Oman in temperatures touching 40 degrees. Learning to adapt quickly to different climates, pitches and match situations is what professional cricket is all about.”
Mongia believes Goa already has the talent to compete with the country’s best but stressed that professionalism is what will unlock that potential.
“Most of the boys have already played 30 to 40 first-class matches. They have the ability to play for India or in the IPL. My role is to help them improve technically and mentally while creating a professional environment. Vision alone isn’t enough. Success comes through discipline, fitness, work ethic, good food habits and a champion’s mindset.”
One player who embodies that pathway is Suyash Prabhudessai, who progressed through Goa’s cricketing system before establishing himself at Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL.
“The Goa Cricket Association has played a huge role in my journey. From my junior cricket days, they gave me the opportunities, facilities and exposure I needed. Representing Goa at different levels helped me build confidence and eventually reach the IPL.”
Prabhudessai hopes his story encourages the next generation.
“If my journey inspires young cricketers in Goa to believe they can reach the highest level, I’ll be proud. Players need the most guidance during age-group cricket because that’s when they’re learning, developing and dreaming of playing at the top level.”
Having experienced overseas training himself, he believes initiatives like the Oman tour are invaluable.
“Training in different conditions challenges you technically and mentally. You experience different pitches, weather and playing styles while strengthening team bonding. It creates a professional environment before a long domestic season.”
He echoed Mongia’s belief that talent must be backed by consistency.
“We have talented cricketers in Goa, but talent alone isn’t enough. To compete at the highest level, players need discipline, fitness, consistency and a strong work ethic. The best players never stop learning.”
With experienced leadership, international exposure and a clear development pathway, the Goa Cricket Association is steadily building more than a competitive team—it is creating a sustainable cricketing culture.
The recent India U-19 and Duleep Trophy selections, Suyash Prabhudessai’s rise to the IPL and the overseas exposure provided to the senior squad all underline the association’s long-term objective: to produce cricketers capable of succeeding at the highest level while establishing Goa as one of India’s emerging cricketing centres.
