Water Metro to Transform River Transport in Goa: Minister Phal Dessai
PORVORIM: Minister for River Navigation Shri Subhash Phal Dessai along with Shri Loknath Behara, Retd. IPS, Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL), briefed the media at the Secretariat regarding the proposed Goa Water Metro Project.The briefing focused on the project’s vision to provide eco-friendly, efficient and affordable water-based public transport across Goa’s rivers and waterways.
Officials said the initiative, modeled on the successful Kochi Water Metro, aims to decongest road traffic and improve connectivity between coastal and hinterland areas.Speaking to the media, Subhash Phal Dessai said the Goa Water Metro will be a landmark project for the state’s transport sector and will offer residents and tourists a sustainable alternative for commuting.
Loknath Behara, MD, KMRL, shared technical insights from the Kochi model and outlined how similar infrastructure can be adapted to Goa’s geography.
He added that KMRL will provide expertise for planning, implementation and operations. Senior officials from the River Navigation Department were also present during the briefing.The government stated that detailed surveys and feasibility studies are underway, and further announcements on routes and timelines will be made soon.
