Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bills Calls on Goa Governor

DONA PAULA: The Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 called on Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju at Lok Bhavan, Dona Paula on Tuesday, as part of its study visit to the state.The Bills, popularly referred to as the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, seek to synchronize elections to the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and local bodies, along with necessary legal amendments for Union Territories.During the meeting, Committee members briefed the Governor on the objectives of the proposed legislation and the rationale behind simultaneous elections. Discussions reportedly focused on the administrative, financial, and logistical implications of holding concurrent polls, and how the move could impact governance and federal structure.

The Committee is on a nationwide study tour to consult stakeholders, constitutional authorities, and the public before finalizing its report to Parliament. Goa was included in the itinerary to gather perspectives from the state on the feasibility and impact of the proposal. Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju welcomed the delegation and exchanged views with the members on democratic processes and electoral reforms.The ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bills have been referred to the Joint Committee of Parliament for detailed examination and public consultation.
