Adv Carlos slams govt for foolhardy attempt at making flooding at Guirim worse
MAPUSA: Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Friday slammed the government for what he said was a complete waste of public funds in its foolhardy attempt at trying to build embankments along the Mapusa River between Guirim, Mapusa and surrounding villages like Bastora and Paliem.
Referring to farmers complaints that despite crores of Rupees being spent the fields were still getting flooded Adv Carlos said that the entire endeavour only proves that the Goa government’s contractors know very little about the State and its fields.
“Before standing for elections, I had said that these people who are filling the fields and building the highway will result in there being no proper water flow. But they always hit back saying that they know what they are doing and that they have taken precautions,” Adv Carlos said.
“This is just a method to make money, the contractor cuts costs, and even if there were provisions in the plan they were never implemented. On the Guirim side even vehicles went under water as also on the Bastora side every year since the highway was built it is getting flooded. I had raised the issue in the Assembly, that the highway was built without taking proper environmental care and the impact will be on the people and farmers,” he said.
“We had told the WRD engineer and the farmers had told the WRD engineer that even with your embankment the fields will be flooded but they were not convinced. Now we have seen. The CM had come for inspection, I was not given notice, there was no invitation. The CM even went by boat. But on top of it all, it has now become worse,” he also said.
“But this is a system failure. I have my doubts about the competence of these contractors. Just because they build big highways do they know how Goa’s fields and water flow works? This is not just a wake up call, but a hard knock on the government for not taking into account the sentiments of the public. This is a failure of the government, they spent the money, the money went flowing away and now the farmers are suffering losses,” he also said.
“Finally the people get fed up and give up on agriculture,” he also said.
