BJP Govt failed to control rising Crimes; Guv should intervene: Congress

Panaji: The Congress party on Thursday urged Goa Governor Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju to intervene in the alarming rise of crime in the state, accusing the BJP government of failing to bring the situation under control.

AICC In-charge Manickrao Thakare, GPCC President Girish Chodankar, LoP Yuri Alemao, Working Presidents M.K. Shaikh and MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira, North Goa District President Shashank Narvekar, and others were present.

“With police being caught taking bribes, including at border check posts, it becomes evident that our borders are not secure, allowing criminals to enter the state by paying bribes and leave without any difficulty. Today, citizens across Goa are expressing genuine concern about their safety. Parents worry about the safety of their children, while women are increasingly anxious about their security,” stated the memorandum.

Girish Chodankar said that the BJP government has miserably failed to control crime in Goa.

“Two years ago, a policeman was found helping robbers loot people, and then again a policeman assisted an undertrial accused to escape from police custody. Such incidents have elevated the confidence of criminals and increased public concern,” he said.

He added that the brutal killing of Umakant Khot in November 2025 at Morjim, after he reportedly opposed illegal hill-cutting, deeply disturbed public conscience.

“If we see such crimes, Goans are feeling unsafe. People are afraid to send their children to school. Even tourists may feel unsafe visiting Goa. Our economy depends on tourism, and hence we sought the intervention of the Governor and told him how law and order has collapsed,” Chodankar said.

He further stated that drugs are easily available in Goa, but the state police fail to nab the culprits.
He alleged that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s focus is on the sale of Goa and corruption. “He has sidelined the Home Department, and hence we want the Governor’s intervention to take control over this,” Chodankar said.

LoP Yuri Alemao said that crime cases have drastically increased in the state. “In the last four years, more than 127 murders, 383 rapes, 2,113 cases of theft, burglary, and robbery, 354 kidnappings, and 1,127 assaults have been registered. This clearly suggests that the BJP government is promoting crime, and it appears as though Goa has become a ‘murder destination’. Our borders remain unsafe, as bribes are openly taken at check posts,” Alemao said.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Manickrao Thakare said that the BJP government has failed to tackle rising crimes in the state.

“The BJP government is responsible for the collapse of law and order. How will people feel safe when crimes are rising?” he questioned.
