Calangute MLA Reviews Foul Odour Issue at Saligao GWMC Plant, Seeks Long-Term Solution
Calangute: Calangute MLA held a meeting at the Goa Waste Management Corporation plant in Saligao on Thursday along with Calangute Sarpanch, panchayat members, and GWMC officials to address complaints of foul odour emanating from the facility and affecting nearby areas.Residents of Calangute and surrounding villages have repeatedly raised concerns about the stench, particularly during monsoon, saying it impacts daily life and health.During the meeting, the MLA urged concerned authorities to implement effective and long-term measures to curb the odour. He stressed that resolving the issue was essential to improve the quality of life for residents living in the vicinity of the plant.
Officials from GWMC briefed the MLA and panchayat representatives on current odour control measures being undertaken at the plant and assured that additional steps would be explored. The Calangute Sarpanch and panch members also highlighted specific areas where the smell was most severe and requested regular monitoring. The MLA said a follow-up review would be held to assess progress and ensure accountability. He added that while the waste treatment facility is crucial for the state, operations must not come at the cost of public health and comfort. The GWMC plant at Saligao treats solid waste from North Goa and is a key component of the state’s waste management infrastructure.
