Mapusa May 23 2026 — A field near a relgious structure at Pomburpa caught fire on Thursday afternoon, triggering panic among locals before Mapusa Fire Station personnel brought it under control.The incident was reported at 13:17 hrs. A fire tender from Mapusa, led by leading firefighter Shri Prashant Shetgaonkar, rushed to the spot and began operations. Dry grass and rising temperatures are suspected to have fuelled the blaze, which spread quickly across the open field.Firefighters battled the flames for nearly 40 minutes and prevented it from reaching nearby houses and the chapel premises. No casualties or major property damage were reported. Locals assisted by clearing access paths and alerting authorities promptly.

“The fire was contained in time due to quick response. We are monitoring fields in the area as dry weather continues,” said Shetgaonkar. With summer heat at its peak, the Fire and Emergency Services have advised residents not to burn dry waste in open areas and to report any signs of fire immediately.
