13-Year-Old Hockey Player Dies After Ball Strike to Head
GUIRIM: the hockey ball that killed her was not from a match. It was not from a rival team. It was from her own teammate, during a routine drill that she had done a thousand times before. On Thursday, a 13-year-old girl — the fastest left-winger in her Guirim academy batch — took a hard, rising ball to the side of her head and never got up. Coaches shouted her name. It was the last time her name was called on that turf. She collapsed where she stood. No one screamed. The sound, players said, was just the dull thud of ball on bone, then silence. An ambulance was called from Mapusa. She was unconscious when they lifted her off the turf, her stick still lying near the 25-yard line. Doctors at Goa Medical College, Bambolim, declared her dead on arrival.
