CM Launches New Ferry Boats Kushavati and Salaulim to Boost River Connectivity
Kushavati: In a move to strengthen inland water transport, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Saturday launched two new ferry boats, Kushavati and Salaulim, from the Betim Ferry Ramp, Panaji. The launch was held in the presence of River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai, Saligao MLA Kedar Naik, officials of the River Navigation Department, and other dignitaries. , the new vessels will be deployed on the busy Panaji-Betim route, one of the most used ferry corridors in the state. The addition is expected to reduce congestion during peak hours and cut waiting time for thousands of daily commuters, students, and tourists. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sawant said the government is focused on modernising Goa’s river transport network to make it safer, faster, and more commuter-friendly. He added that upgrading the ferry fleet is part of a broader plan to improve last-mile connectivity in riverine areas.
River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai noted that the department has been phasing out older vessels and inducting new ferries with better safety and passenger amenities.
MLA Kedar Naik welcomed the launch, saying the new boats would bring significant relief to residents of Betim, Verem, Penha de Franca, and surrounding areas who rely on the service daily. Department officials said both Kushavati and Salaulim are equipped with improved seating, lighting, safety rails, and life-saving equipment as per updated norms. The vessels were inspected by the dignitaries before the ceremonial flag-off. The Panaji-Betim ferry service is a vital link across the Mandovi, especially for two-wheeler commuters and pedestrians. With the new additions, the River Navigation Department now aims to maintain shorter service intervals during rush hours.
