Save Khobravaddo from prostitution, Baga locals urge police
Calangute: A large number of sex workers are seen all along the roadside soliciting customers at night in Khobravaddo, Calangute, according to locals who met Calangute PI Laxi Amonkar on Friday demanding police action against the nuisance.
“They solicit customers and take them in people’s compounds for sex. All sorts of women, from different countries, come and do business on the entire road in Khobravaddo, creating a nuisance. We people have become nauseated by these activities. The situation has become such that tourists call out to local women. This has become unacceptable. There is no safety for our women,” residents said.
Calangute resident Benedict Lobo said they had a meeting with Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, panchayat members and Calangute PI on March 11 during which it was decided to form a ‘neighbourhood watch’ committee, and Friday’s meeting was to follow up for the necessary action. “We requested the PI to shut down all the late night bars and spas which stay open till 1am or even later, and the prostitution which is going on. The PI has assured us that police will be taking strict action,” Lobo said.
On Friday residents submitted a letter to police, with a “Formal request for enforcement action against illegal roadside activities,” stating: “Following our joint meeting on March 11th with the local MLA and residents, we are deeply concerned about the increasing presence of roadside solicitation, which has become a significant nuisance and is tarnishing Calangute’s reputation. To restore order, we formally request that the police initiate immediate drives to clear these TOUTS, PIMPS AND PROSTITUTES from our streets. Additionally, as agreed upon during the meeting please ensure that all spas and massage parlors are strictly closed by 10pm. Our committee is ready to collaborate with your team to monitor these areas and provide necessary feedback. We look forward to seeing a visible change in the safety and character of our neighbourhood.”
