Goa Government Accelerates Agricultural Growth with Community Farming Initiative in Surla

Panaji, 1 March 2026: The Government of Goa inaugurated the Community Farming & Farmer Excellence initiative at Surla, Sankhali, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods. The flagship programme is being implemented by the Directorate of Agriculture to encourage collective farming and optimise land use for improved productivity.
The initiative focuses on community-based farming models that enable farmers to work together, enhance output and increase income. The programme also included the felicitation of progressive farmers in recognition of their innovation, dedication and contribution to modern agricultural practices in the State. Growing participation of young farmers in collective farming has led to improved cultivation methods and better market opportunities. In particular, the cultivation of drumstick leaves and pods has expanded significantly in the region, generating strong demand and improved returns for farming communities.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said, “There should be no distinction between rich and poor when it comes to agriculture; everyone must be encouraged to take up farming.” He highlighted that agricultural income remains exempt from income tax, making farming a secure and beneficial livelihood. Emphasising planned cultivation and innovation, he stated that Goa has significant potential to increase agricultural production and reiterated that farmers will be central to the State’s development journey.
