Govt Sets April 27, 2026 Deadline for Birth Registration — No Extensions

Panaji, Feb 24: In a major alert to citizens, the government has announced that individuals without birth registration can register only till April 27, 2026. The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, implemented nationwide from October 1, 2023, makes birth certificates a crucial document for various government purposes.

The deadline, initially set for May 14, 2020, has been extended to April 27, 2026, with no further extensions possible. Citizens can register births by submitting two supporting documents, such as school leaving certificates, educational certificates (10th/12th standard), passport, PAN card, or Aadhaar card, to the Birth and Death Registration Office.

Notably, the Muslim community is urged to take note that birth certificates will be considered strong proof of citizenship. Many mistakenly rely on school certificates, but this may not suffice.

The government has made provisions for citizens with nameless birth records (older than 15 years) to add names. Birth certificates are essential for school/college admission, employment, foreign travel, and other important needs.

With about 75% of senior Muslims lacking birth and marriage records, the government emphasizes the importance of registration. Birth/death certificates can now be used as internationally accepted identity documents, as per the Central Government’s order.
