Porvorim Pays Glorious Tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Grand Celebration of ShivJayanti
Porvorim, 21st February 2026 – The Department of Tourism and Porvorim came together for a grand and dignified celebration of ShivJayanti at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Malatar, Porvorim (Bardez-Goa) on 19th February 2026. The event was marked by cultural performances, floral tributes and inspiring addresses by distinguished dignitaries. The gathering also acknowledged and appreciated the proactive initiative of the Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, in facilitating the development and upkeep of the statue site, ensuring it stands as a proud landmark symbolising heritage, valour and cultural identity.
The event was graced by Shri Kedar J. Naik, Hon’ble MLA, Saligao Constituency and Chairman, Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC); Shri Amit Asnodkar (ZP, Socorro Constituency), Shri Sandeep Salgaonkar (ZP, Penha de França), Shri Swapnil Chodankar (Sarpanch, Penha de França Panchayat), and Smt. Sonia Sanjay Pednekar (Sarpanch, Socorro Panchayat), Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director, GTDC; along with members of the Panchayat and local residents.
The Chairman of GTDC, Shri Kedar J Naik in his remarks, reflected on the historical significance of Shivaji Maharaj’s rule “Shivaji Maharaj was not only a warrior but a compassionate ruler who prioritised the welfare of his people. His administrative foresight and inclusive governance model set benchmarks that remain relevant even today. It is our responsibility to ensure that such legacies are celebrated with dignity and pride.”
The celebration commenced with the rhythmic beats of traditional dhol-tasha, creating an atmosphere of pride and reverence. Students presented a powerful Powada, a traditional ballad narrating episodes from the life of Shivaji Maharaj, captivating the audience and evoking deep admiration for his valor, administrative acumen and commitment to justice.
As part of the formal ceremony, the Hon’ble Chairman and Managing Director of Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), along with other dignitaries, offered floral tributes at the statue of Shivaji Maharaj in Porvorim. The gesture symbolized collective respect for a leader whose ideals of governance, courage and social equity continue to inspire generations.
Concluding the formal proceedings, the Managing Director of GTDC, Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to all participants and attendees. He remarked “The enthusiastic participation of students, citizens and stakeholders reflects the deep respect that Shivaji Maharaj commands across communities. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that celebrate our shared history and cultural identity.”
The celebration stood as a testament to Goa’s commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of national icons while fostering cultural pride and historical awareness among its people.
