Casino Conundrum: Panaji Mayor’s Dilemma”
PANAJI: The mayor of Corporation of City of Panaji, Mr Rohit Monserratte informed a news channel that personally he does not support the casinos and acknowledged concern raised by the residents of Panaji over the proposed new casino in the River Mandovi.
He said that the Corporation of City of Panaji has no role to play while issuing the licences to casino operators as it falls outside its jurisdiction adding that the corporation has limited role in granting trade licenses for casino offices on land.
Mr Monserratte, said that the demand against the casino would be placed before the Municipal Council meeting for discussion. Meanwhile the social activist Mr Francis Coelho questioned the CCP Mayor over his views saying that he was against the casinos in the River Mandovi.
He added that his father had allegedly promised the people of Panaji that he would either shift or remove the casinos from River Mandovi within 100 days if he was elected to power but till date nothing was done. But now the government is planning to have a mega casino and the people are planning to protest against the new casino. He also asked the mayor whether he will join the proposed protest against the new casino?
