“Chimbel Villagers Win: Unity Mall, Prashasan Stambh to be Relocated After 44-Day Protest”
PANAJI: After receiving the letters from the Tourism Department and the General Administration Department, regarding Unity Mall and Prashasan Stambh, the Chimbel villagers call off their protest.
Chimbel villagers ended their 44 day old chain hunger strike after the chief minister, Dr Pramod Sawant held a meeting with the concerned officials on the Unity Mall and Prashasan Stambh project and assured the protestors of a separate written communication addressing their demands, following which the agitation was withdrawn, revealed the leader of the agitators Mr Govind Shirodkar.
Earlier the residents had issued a one day ultimatum to the government demanding that the project leader Ajay Khokar said the agitators were seeking written assurance from the General Administration Department. He warned that if no response is received by the evening the protectors will announce their next course of action.
The protests against the Unity Mall and other projects had gathered at Azad Maidan where they announced the withdrawal of their protest on Monday after the government provided them with a written assurance that the Unity Mall along the Prashasan Stabh, would be shifted. The decision to end the agitation was announced by the villagers at Azad Maidan on Monday.
