Calangute Gram Sabha Reviews Simplified House Numbering System

Calangute, Goa – In a significant move aimed at easing the lives of residents, the Calangute Gram Sabha has reviewed and welcomed the simplified house numbering system introduced by the Goa government. The new process allows separate families living in the same house to obtain distinct house numbers without the hassle of physically partitioning the plot, a procedure that has often led to complications and disputes in the past.

Speaking at the meeting, Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira expressed his support for the move, stating, “This is a game-changer for nuclear families in Calangute. It will greatly benefit them and simplify access to basic amenities like water and electricity connections.” Panch member  echoed Sequeira’s sentiments, adding, “It’s a welcome step, but we need to ensure smooth implementation to avoid any glitches.”

The new system is expected to bring about a significant reduction in property disputes, a problem that has plagued many families in the areaanother Calangute resident, welcomed the move, saying, “This is a much-needed step. It will definitely help with property disputes and make it easier for us to manage our homes.”

However, not everyone is convinced., a local homeowner, expressed concern over potential tax implications, “Hope it doesn’t increase our property taxes. We already pay a lot, and I’m worried this might add to our burden.”

On the other hand,  another villager, was more optimistic, “I’m pleased to see this change. It makes it easier for families living together to manage their own households and get separate amenities.”

The Gram Sabha is moving forward with implementing the new system, with Sarpanch Sequeira assuring residents of a smooth rollout. “We’ll ensure that the process is hassle-free and benefits everyone,” he said.

The new house numbering system is part of the Goa government’s efforts to simplify bureaucratic processes and improve the ease of living for residents

speaking further sequeira said the approved constructions were continuing as the VP had issued construction licenses based on the ODP which was then applicable. However, he said with the Bombay high court at Goa scrapping the ODP and ruling that the Regional Plan 2021 be followed, the VP now only issues construction licenses based on the RP 2021. “We have rejected some applications for construction licenses as they were not as per the RP 2021,” Sequeira said.

A number of other issues were also discussed. Villagers said that though they have been promised for years that the water supply situation would improve, and even new water pipelines have been laid the situation is still the same, with people having to get up at midnight or 2am to fill their water tanks, and some areas receiving water supply only once in two days.

The sarpanch said there has been some improvement in a few areas after the full-fledged commissioning of the new water storage tanks at Umtawaddo.

“A lot of work is left to complete the Pilerne water treatment plant which will supply Calangute. Also the pipeline from the water pumping station at Boa Viagem to the Pilerne water treatment plant is still not completed. All this will take time. The treated water from the Baga sewage plant will also come only after the reverse pipeline is laid,” he said.
