Drishti Marine Lifesavers Rescue Eight Persons From Drowning; Foil Theft Attempt at Betalbatim Beach
Betalbatim January 19, 2026 – Eight persons were rescued by Drishti Marine lifesavers along the state’s coastline during the weekend, even as a lifesaver also assisted in the nabbing of a thief, who had stolen a bag from a Russian woman tourist at Betalbatim beach. Over the weekend, on-duty lifesavers also administered first aid to two individuals and traced two missing children on Goa’s beaches.
Ashwem beach: A 64-year-old woman tourist from Pune was rescued after facing difficulty in the water off the beach. Lifesaver Chandrakant Devji responded using a rescue tube, assisted by Darpan Revankar on a jet ski and safely brought the victim to shore.
Anjuna beach: A 24-year-old male tourist from Mumbai was caught in a rip current approximately 60 metres off the beach. Lifesaver Vinod Salelkar responded promptly and rescued the victim, bringing him safely to shore.
Baga beach: An 18-year-old male tourist from Delhi was rescued after facing difficulty in the water off Baga beach. Lifesaver Suvrabh Kumar conducted the rescue using a rescue board and brought the victim safely to shore. At the same beach, a four-year-old boy from Pune was reported missing. A coordinated search was initiated and the child was located at another stretch of the beach by lifesaver Biliyam Surim. The child was safely handed over to his guardians after due verification.
Candolim beach: Two male tourists aged 14 and 20 from Hyderabad were caught in a flash rip current while swimming off the beach. Lifesavers Sunil Matondkar and Rohit Kandulna responded promptly using rescue tubes and safely rescued both victims. At the same beach, a 17-year-old teenager from Kazakhstan sustained a deep cut to his left foot. First aid was administered by the lifesavers on duty.
Baina beach: A five-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh sustained a jellyfish sting on his leg off Baina beach. Lifesaver Yallappa Chalwadi provided first aid to the injured boy.
Betalbatim beach: A Russian woman tourist reported her bag stolen after she entered the sea off Betalbatim. Lifesaver Ganesh Mesta, recalling a suspicious individual seen earlier, followed and apprehended the suspect. The stolen bag was recovered and handed over to the guest.
Agonda beach: Three adults from Saligao, Goa—two males aged 35 and 40 and one female aged 37—were caught in a rip current while swimming and began to drown. Lifesaver Datta Velip entered the water and secured two victims. Simultaneously, Pralhad Velip rescued one victim using a jet ski, while another lifesaver assisted the operation using a surfboard. All three were safely brought to shore.
Palolem beach: A five-year-old girl from Rajasthan was reported missing at Palolem beach by her parents. An immediate search operation was initiated, which included public announcements through a patrol jeep. Within 10 minutes, the child was located safely and handed over to her parents after confirmation. At the same beach, a foreign female tourist reported her bag missing at Palolem beach. After informing the tower captain, a search operation was initiated. The bag was located within 30 minutes by a lifesaver. The owner was contacted, and after confirming ownership, the bag was safely handed over to her.
