“Bono’s Brilliance Sends Morocco to AFCON Final with a win over Nigeria
RABAT, Morocco – Morocco edged Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw, booking their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations final. Goalkeeper Yassine “Bono” Bounou was the hero, saving two penalties as Morocco triumphed in the shootout.
The win sets up a showdown with 2021 champions Senegal in the final on Sunday in Rabat. Morocco, bidding for their first title since 1976, will face stiff competition – and potentially steep ticket prices, with reports of scalpers selling semifinal tickets for up to $760.
In a match dominated by Morocco’s possession, Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey was booked early on, ruling him out of the third-place play-off. The Super Eagles struggled to trouble Bounou, with Ademola Lookman’s shot the only one on target.
Morocco’s fans were in full voice, whistling Nigeria’s every move and cheering on their team. Coach Walid Regragui praised the supporters, saying “We played with 12 (players)”.
Youssef El-Nesyri scored the winning penalty, securing Morocco’s place in the final.
