Birch by Romeo Lane Fire: Inquiry Blames Regulatory Failures for 25 Deaths
PANAJI: The magisterial inquiry into the deadly fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora has pinned the blame on regulatory failures and lapses by authorities. The report, submitted to the State government on December 23, highlights serious shortcomings in oversight and non-compliance with safety norms.
The fire, which broke out in early December, claimed 25 lives, including 20 staff members and 5 tourists. The inquiry committee, led by the North Goa District Collector, made 60 recommendations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The report reveals glaring lapses in clearances and permissions, with authorities being held responsible for issuing approvals despite deficiencies. The government will now decide on further action based on the findings.
